I’m convinced my 8-year-old son has a future in comedy. He’s a complete goofball and loves to make people laugh. Whether it be knock-knock jokes, doing armpit farts or making silly noises, he’s always trying to come up with ways to get others to laugh.
I knew San Diego offered theater classes for kids, but my son was never interested in them. Then I found out about improv classes for kids and teens at National Comedy Theatre. Improv is a great way to build confidence and improve public speaking skills for kids (and adults – NCT offers adult classes too). Plus, kids learn the basics of storytelling and stagecraft too in a supportive environment – and frankly, my son would much rather work on his comedy skills than dramatic theater.
NCT offers improv classes Feb. 23 through March 30 for kids ages 8-12 from 10-11:30 am and teens ages 13-17 from 12:30-2 pm at the new NCT Training Center at Point Loma’s Liberty Station, building 176, suite 203. Tuition is just $125 for a six-week session. For more information or to register, visit NCT improv classes for kids and teens. NCT also offers a summer camp for improv and sketch comedy.
I recently went to a show at NCT to watch adult improv. It was hilarious. It’s done the same style as “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” where the audience makes suggestions to guide the show content. NCT has performed more than 3,600 shows since its opening in 1999. Shows are offered Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and 9:45 pm, and Sundays at 7:30 pm. Plus, there’s a midnight show the last Saturday of the month at 11:45 pm that’s supposed to be a no-holds barred, improvs how where anything goes. I can’t wait to check it out. Check out showtimes for NCT.
