I can’t believe it’s almost the end of October. Time has been flying by. It’s finally cooling down in San Diego, which makes me sad because I love the summers. But one silver lining is apple picking in the orchards in Julian, a quaint town about 45 minutes east of San Diego. We go there at least once a year to pick apples straight from the orchards.
Last weekend, we went to Raven Hill Orchard, which still had apples at this time of year – while many others close down. I love that all the apples were organic, so they were a bit smaller than conventional apples – more like mountain apples. We just picked a few apples from the trees and tried them out before filling up our bags. We initially thought the green apples would be sour, but there were super sweet.
We filled two bags ($10/each) full of apples and now have plenty to last us for a while. It’s important to me for my kids to know where food comes from. They loved the experience of looking for apples, working together to pick and fill their bags, and of course to enjoy the fruits (no pun intended) of their labor.
My littlest guy just loved walking around the orchard and picking apples up from the group. He was a happy camper.
Did you have a chance to go apple picking yet this year?
